Our Story

The Play Like Ray Challenge celebrates the life of Richmond native, Raymond Sawada, featuring an ice hockey tournament in his honour.

What does it mean to “Play Like Ray”?

Ray was passionate about hockey and basketball, and excelled at both. In high school, he had to focus his time and energy on hockey to pursue a professional career. Once his time as a professional hockey player came to an end, his gritty, competitive and hardworking athletic personality was yet again channeled into his love for basketball.

Raymond's teammates from the Richmond Sockeyes, Nanaimo Clippers, Cornell Big Red, Texas Stars, and Burnaby Fire Department are the men who can attest to his remarkable work ethic and admirable character. Competitive sports at the highest level reveal the true nature of a person; Raymond had a warrior spirit.
